Pastor's Update

In the sixth month of Elizabeth's pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth, a town in Galilee, to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin's name was Mary. The angel went to her and said, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! the Lord is with you."     ~Luke 1:26-28

Look at the Wrapping

In the middle of all the hustle and bustle of these days before Christmas, let us steal away for a few moments. Let us steal away either individually or with our families. Let us steal away for a few moments to be with God!

He wrapped a Christmas present for us. He planned to give it since before the world began. Now, as the big day draws near, he wants to get us ready to receive this present that he has wanted to give us since before we were born.

But look at how God wrapped your Christmas present. He sent an angel to a backwater town, to a girl of no note or position. You would think that with all of God's preparation for Christmas, he could have wrapped his present a bit better. He could have sent the angel to holy Jerusalem or to mighty Rome or to ancient Damascus or to learned Athens. But no; that's not the way he wanted it.

So the angel came to the lowly maid in the forgotten town of Nazareth and announced, "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you." That's not what we would have expected. But how perfect! How wonderful the lowly wrapping!

We steal away to be with God for a moment and to marvel at the wrapping. He came to a nowhere place; then he can come to my little room too! He came to a lowly virgin who merited nothing but received the greatest favor ever bestowed on anyone in all of history; then he can come to the unworthy shrine of my heart too! He does not despise nothingness, nor does he cast aside unworthiness. Quite the contrary, he delights to come to the lowly and the lonely, to embrace the undeserving and those who desperately need his mercy and redemption.

The package is wrapped and the present prepared. In our quiet moments with God this Advent season, we wait to unwrap God's gift and see the present given by the one who says to us this day: "Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you."
